Tesla Was Seeking Lower Tariffs on China-Made EVs Before Canada’s 100% Duty Announcement.

In a recent development, Reuters claims Tesla requested a reduced tariff on its electric vehicles made in China from the Canadian government before Ottawa's announcement of a 100% duty on all Chinese-made vehicles. This information was confirmed by a Canadian government source.

Canada, following the United States' lead, declared that it would impose a 100% tariff on all Chinese-made vehicles, effective October 1. The decision comes as a response to China's alleged state-directed policy of over-capacity in its automotive sector. The new tariffs will impact all EVs imported from China, including those manufactured by Tesla. Ottawa had previously indicated its intention to implement these duties in June.

According to the unnamed government source, Tesla approached Canadian officials before the official tariff announcement. The automaker sought a tariff rate comparable to what it received from the European Union (EU), which had recently imposed a 9% tariff on Tesla’s Chinese-made vehicles, as opposed to a 36.3% rate on other Chinese EV imports.

The EU's tariff for Tesla is based solely on direct subsidies, whereas the United States and Canada considered additional factors such as industrial over-capacity, non-market policies, environmental standards, and labor practices when setting their tariffs. Tesla has not made any further contact with Canadian authorities since the announcement, and the company was unavailable for comment.

Canadian imports of Chinese automobiles surged by 460% year-over-year in 2023, with Vancouver's port receiving 44,356 vehicles, including Tesla's Shanghai-made models. This increase demonstrates the significant impact of the new tariffs.

U.S. President Joe Biden had previously announced in May a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs, a 50% tariff increase on semiconductors and solar cells, and new 25% tariffs on lithium-ion batteries and other strategic goods. Although these tariffs are set to be implemented in September, there is potential for adjustments to the planned duties.

Tesla Launches Referral Program and 1.99% Financing for Model Y in Canada.

Tesla has expanded its offerings in Canada with the introduction of two new programs: a revamped referral program and a limited-time financing promotion for the Model Y.

Following the relaunch of its referral program in the U.S., Tesla has now brought this popular initiative to Canadian customers. Existing Tesla owners in Canada can earn C$650 for every successful referral—excluding the Cybertruck. This reward can be used for a range of benefits, including merchandise, software upgrades, Supercharger credits, service bills, or even towards the purchase of a new Tesla vehicle.

Participants in the referral program can accumulate up to C$6,500 annually, as each owner is eligible to make up to 10 referrals per calendar year. New buyers who use a referral link will also enjoy a C$1,300 discount on their purchase. The same discount applies for existing Tesla owners buying another vehicle.

However, it’s important to note that the referral program is not available in British Columbia due to provincial regulations, which stipulate that only registered salespersons can earn rewards from car sales.

In addition to the referral program, Tesla is offering an attractive financing option for the Model Y. Canadian buyers can take advantage of a 1.99% interest rate on Model Y purchases. According to Tesla’s online configurator.

  • The Model Y Long Range (LR) can be financed with a down payment of C$7,500 at $1,025 per month for 60 months.

  • The Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) is available at $850 per month under the same terms.

  • The Model Y Performance model is offered at $1,113 per month.

  • For those needing longer financing terms, Tesla provides a 3.99% interest rate for up to 96 months.

  • This promotional financing offer is available only for Model Y vehicles delivered by September 30, 2024.

For more details on Tesla’s referral program and financing options, visit Tesla’s official website or contact your local Tesla dealership.

EV Around the World 🌏

Volvo has released news related to their commitment to electrification, in-vehicle user experience as well as updates around their all-electric EX90, so below you’ll find the latest updates from Volvo in short and electrifying pieces:

Volvo is set to introduce a new long-range version of its FH Electric truck, scheduled for release in the latter half of 2025. This advanced model will feature an impressive range of up to 600 km on a single charge, making it suitable for interregional and long-distance transport without frequent recharges. The extended range is achieved through Volvo’s e-axle technology, which allows for a larger battery capacity, along with enhancements in battery efficiency and powertrain management. This aligns with Volvo’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions and offering zero-exhaust emission solutions for high-mileage transport companies.

Volvo is upgrading the XC90 SUV with its latest infotainment system, which was first introduced in the all-electric EX90 and EX30 models. The new system features a larger 11.2-inch central touchscreen with a 21% increase in pixel density, providing a clearer and more intuitive interface. The update, available via an over-the-air software upgrade, will be rolled out to approximately 2.5 million Volvo vehicles worldwide by 2025. Key enhancements include a streamlined home screen layout with easy access to commonly used apps and controls, a contextual bar for recently used features, and improved accessibility for plug-in hybrid drivers.

Volvo has unveiled the updated XC90, its flagship hybrid SUV, featuring significant improvements in both design and technology. The new XC90 includes a refreshed exterior design that aligns with Volvo’s transition toward full electrification, and a redesigned interior that enhances practicality and luxury. The SUV offers more than 70 kilometers of electric range under the WLTP cycle and integrates a larger, higher-resolution touchscreen with new infotainment features. This model maintains its reputation for safety and comfort, with advanced suspension options and improved cabin insulation. The XC90 remains a popular choice among customers, providing a balance between hybrid efficiency and luxury.

Volvo Cars has adjusted its electrification targets due to an “evolving market” conditions and customer preferences. The company now aims for 90-100% of its global sales volume to consist of electrified vehicles by 2030, including both fully electric and plug-in hybrid models. This adjustment replaces Volvo’s previous goal of having a fully electric line-up by 2030. By 2025, Volvo expects its electrified product range to comprise 50-60% of its total sales. Despite these changes, Volvo remains committed to its long-term vision of full electrification and continues to invest in both plug-in and mild hybrid technologies, ensuring a balanced approach as the market evolves.

The all-electric Volvo EX90 SUV is now making its debut, with initial deliveries scheduled for later this month. This flagship model is equipped with advanced core computing systems, including NVIDIA DRIVE® and Snapdragon® platforms, which enhance the car's performance and user experience. The EX90 features up to 600 km of driving range and introduces several industry-first technologies, such as lidar for improved safety and bi-directional charging capabilities. Production of the EX90 is underway at Volvo’s upgraded manufacturing plant in South Carolina, USA.

Hyundai Update: 2025 IONIQ 5, N Vision 74, and Beyond:

Hyundai has unveiled some exciting developments for their electrification strategies and future models. Hyundai has announced that the U.S.-built 2025 IONIQ 5 will feature a new rugged XRT variant and that the high-performance N Vision 74 concept is moving closer to becoming a reality as the company is pushing the boundaries of electric mobility.

The 2025 IONIQ 5: Rugged, Adventure-Ready, and Tesla-Compatible

The 2025 IONIQ 5 has undergone a refresh, debuting a new rugged XRT variant aimed at adventurous drivers seeking off-road capabilities. Built at Hyundai’s brand-new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) facility in Georgia, this model represents the company’s commitment to innovation, performance, and sustainability. Alongside its rugged build, the 2025 IONIQ 5 lineup offers enhanced convenience, improved safety features, and a significant boost in driving range.

A standout feature of the 2025 IONIQ 5 is its adoption of the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS). This is a game-changer for EV drivers in the U.S., as it allows seamless access to over 17,000 Tesla Supercharger stations without needing an adapter. Additionally, the IONIQ 5 will come with a Combined Charging System (CCS) adapter, ensuring compatibility with all charging networks. This makes Hyundai one of the first non-Tesla automakers to offer a native NACS port, offering more flexibility to drivers.

With larger batteries across the lineup, the new IONIQ 5 models promise extended range. Standard Range models have been upgraded from 58.0 kWh to 63.0 kWh, with an estimated 380+ km (240+ miles) of range, while Long Range models boast a jump from 77.4 kWh to 84 kWh, targeting 500+ km (310+ miles) on a single charge. These updates position the IONIQ 5 as a leading contender in the growing EV market.

Also in terms of affordability, Hyundai anticipates that the U.S.-built 2025 IONIQ 5 will qualify for federal tax credits in both the US and Canada.

N Vision 74: A High-Performance EV Inspired by the Past

Hyundai also hinted at exciting developments for its N Vision 74 concept, a high-performance EV with roots in the company’s design heritage. The N Vision 74, inspired by the 1974 Pony Coupe concept, combines the futuristic elements of the virtual Hyundai N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo and a hybrid hydrogen fuel cell system. This concept car, first revealed two years ago, embodies Hyundai’s ambition to electrify performance vehicles.

While details remain scarce, the N Vision 74 is part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to launch 21 electric vehicles by 2030, including affordable models, luxury EVs from Genesis, and high-performance offerings. The company’s CEO Investor Day presentation teased a potential production timeline for the Vision 74, signaling that this long-anticipated model may hit the market sooner than expected.

Hyundai’s Electrification Roadmap

Looking ahead, Hyundai’s electrification roadmap is ambitious. In addition to the 2025 IONIQ 5 and N Vision 74, the automaker plans to introduce the three-row IONIQ 9, affordable EVs like the Inster/Casper subcompact, and more luxury EVs under the Genesis brand. The company’s vision extends beyond battery-powered EVs, as Hyundai continues to explore alternative powertrain options, including hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids.

Hyundai’s dedication to electrification signals a future where high performance, affordability, and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. As the company accelerates its EV plans, Hyundai is set to be a key player in shaping the future of electric mobility.

Vacuum installed between Tesla V4 Superchargers in Germany.

Came across this on X, and always thought it was a good idea to have vacuums and other amenities near chargers for public use. Vacuums, garbage cans, maybe a small water hose for exterior cleaning would be useful? I think the only deterrent here is that if there are more amenities added, that also means more things to be vandalized or stolen. Do amenities such as these make sense? What do you think?

Tesla's Revamped 'Actual Smart Summon' (ASS): A Major Improvement, but Still No Lacking.

Tesla’s long-awaited "Smart Summon" feature is making headlines again after its troubled debut. Originally launched with high expectations, the initial version of Smart Summon faced significant criticism and was subsequently removed due to its poor performance. After years of delays and development, Tesla has reintroduced the feature as part of the 2024.26.20 software update on September 2nd.

The latest iteration of Smart Summon, dubbed "Actual Smart Summon" or "ASS," brings significant improvements. Unlike its predecessor, which struggled with functionality, the new Smart Summon can now navigate short distances autonomously, moving from point to point without driver intervention. However, it still does not possess the capability to park itself.

Tesla’s initial Smart Summon feature, launched four years ago, aimed to let drivers summon their cars across short distances. Despite the feature's promise, it was heavily criticized for its subpar performance. Even Elon Musk acknowledged the issues and vowed to deliver a functional version soon.

Tesla’s revamped Smart Summon, part of the 2024.26.20 update, appears to be a substantial improvement over the original version. Videos shared by Tesla enthusiasts on social media over the Labor Day weekend showcase the updated feature’s enhanced performance. While it still cannot park the car in a designated space, the new version offers two modes: “Come to Me” and “Go to Target.” In these modes, the vehicle can autonomously travel short distances and stop at the chosen location.

The improvement in Smart Summon’s performance can be attributed to Tesla’s shift to the Vision system, which uses cameras instead of ultrasonic sensors. This camera-based system provides better navigation through parking lots and allows drivers to monitor the car’s movements via a live camera feed. This update addresses some of the limitations of the previous ultrasonic sensor-based system.

Alongside the improved Smart Summon, Tesla has introduced a new “Dumb Summon” mode. This mode enables users to control the car’s forward and backward movements using simple arrow key controls in the Tesla app. This feature resembles the remote park assist found in higher-trim models from Hyundai and Kia.
