Electric Car Performance in Winter: Tesla, Audi, and Nissan Lead the Way.

As snow begins to blanket the landscape across Canada, electric vehicle owners brace themselves for the inevitable range loss associated with colder temperatures. A recent study by battery health and data startup Recurrent reveals that not all EVs are created equal when it comes to winter performance. Analyzing data from 10,000 EVs, including 18 different models, the study found that Tesla, Audi, and Nissan EVs exhibit minimal winter range loss compared to their counterparts.

Why do EVs experience range reduction in winter? Cold temperatures hinder the chemical and physical reactions that release energy from the battery that provides electrical energy to the motor, and cabin heating (especially EVs that use resistive heaters) further depletes the high-voltage battery, leading to reduced range. Modern EVs, however, combat this issue with features like heat pumps that recycle excess heat from the battery and motors, improving efficiency and minimizing range loss.

During the 2022-2023 winter season, Recurrent's comprehensive analysis found that, on average, EVs experienced a 30% lower range in freezing temperatures. The observed winter range, factoring in real-world variables such as climate, terrain, and driving patterns, was 70.3% of the normal range.

Among the models studied, the 2021-2022 Audi E-Tron (rebadged as the Q8 E-Tron for model years 2023 onward) showcased the lowest range drop at 0°C, with a mere 16% reduction compared to its normal range. This can be attributed to its early adoption of a heat pump, recapturing up to 3 kilowatts of electricity by converting wasted heat from the motor.

The 2019 Nissan Leaf demonstrated a relatively small range degradation, losing only 23% of its range at 0°C. Newer Leaf models with advanced thermal management systems, including battery warmers, further enhance performance.

Tesla's thermal management system also stood out, with the Model 3, Model Y, and Model X averaging a 24% range loss in winter. Tesla's patented heat pump, introduced in 2021, incorporates innovations like a "super manifold" and an "octo valve" to enhance efficiency. Features like battery preconditioning further contribute to minimizing range loss during winter.

While these tests were conducted at 0°C, it's essential to note that results may vary in colder regions.

Amazon and Hyundai Partner to Offer Online Car Sales.

Amazon has announced its foray into online car sales, marking a significant shift in the e-commerce giant's offerings. The initial collaboration is with Hyundai, enabling Hyundai dealerships to list vehicles on Amazon's platform starting next year.

Unlike the previous model, where customers could browse car showrooms and compare prices on Amazon without the option to make a purchase, this partnership changes the game. Hyundai dealers will soon start listing models for sale on Amazon, providing customers with the opportunity to browse, select, and purchase cars directly through the online platform.

Customers will have the flexibility to choose their preferred payment methods and decide whether to pick up the purchased vehicle at a nearby dealership or have it conveniently delivered to their doorstep. It's crucial to note that despite the transaction occurring on Amazon's platform, the end seller remains the dealership. Amazon acts as the intermediary, streamlining the buying process.

While Amazon has been gradually expanding its presence in the automotive sector with virtual showrooms and price comparison tools, this move signifies a significant leap into the actual sale of vehicles. The company aims to enhance the car shopping experience by leveraging its vast customer base and providing an additional avenue for dealers to showcase their selection.

As part of the collaboration, Amazon's voice assistant, Alexa, will be integrated into Hyundai vehicles from 2025. Additionally, Hyundai will utilize Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud services, further solidifying the partnership.

Car shopping has long been a frustrating experience for many consumers, with dealership interactions often topping the list of grievances. Amazon's move aligns with changing consumer preferences, mirroring the success of Tesla's direct-to-consumer (DTC) approach. Despite laws in 48 states limiting or banning manufacturers from selling vehicles directly, Amazon's collaboration with Hyundai cleverly navigates this challenge by keeping dealerships integral to the process.
