Canada has potential to be location for Tesla’s next factory.

At Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, Elon Musk provided a lot of information on the direction of the company and announced that details regarding the next Gigafactory location will be revealed later this year. Musk discussed Tesla’s plants, specifically the Gigafactory Berlin and Gigafactory Texas which both opened this year and are both heavily focused on building Tesla’s Model Y.

Although there have been rumours of Tesla considering manufacturing locations in China, US, India and Indonesia, these have all been rumours with no hard facts pointing to the true locations being considered. Therefore, when the topic came up at the shareholders meeting, where the audience was asking for hints about the location, Elon asked the audience where they should build it. Musk admitted that Canada was the most heard suggestion. His response:

"We got a lot of Canada. I'm half Canadian, so maybe I should?"

Earlier in 2022, it was reported that Tesla was strictly looking at sites in North America and that a location in the US was not the only option. With that being said, Musk assured investors that Tesla is planning 10-12 vehicle assembly plants with enormous annual capacity.

"Ultimately, we'll end up building probably at least 10 or 12 Gigafactories and they will be really big Gigafactories aiming for an average output of 1.5 to 2 million units per factory, which is enormous." said Elon.

For reference, Tesla's highest-performing Gigafactories so far—Giga Shanghai and Fremont Factory—last year churned out about 500,000 vehicles each.

BMW has released details on their latest EV, the 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35.

BMW has received praise from critics with its current fully electric lineup from the BMW i4 to the iX. Now the company is announcing a more “affordable” trim of the BMW i4 – the eDrive35.

The eDrive35 is expected to provide consumers with a range of 418kms in a RWD single-motor configuration which provides an estimates 281hp and 295 lg-ft of torque. The battery will have a 66kWh capacity and can charge at a maximum of 180kW on DC charging. The eDrive35 will share the same 400V architecture as the other trim levels of the i4 series. Consumers will get all of the above for the “affordable price” of $55,000.

With this new offering, purchasers will qualify for the $5,000purchase incentive as part of the federal iZev program and current provincial rebates as well, which currently range from $3,000 to $7,000 depending on location.

In terms of aesthetics, the eDrive35 will share the look as the eDrive40, which will allow the company to utilize production and quality control measurements that are already established for the model. By 2030, BMW has the goal of having 50% of it’s global sales to be EVs.

VW announces Canadian pricing for all-electric 2023 ID.4

Volkswagen has announced that assembly of the ID.4 electric vehicles at their factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA. The facility is 1 of 6 VW facilities globally to produce electric vehicles for the Volkswagen EV lineup. VW has committed over $7-billion USD in investment to the North American market to boos product portfolio, regional research and development and manufacturing.

Volkswagen has also announced that the 2023 ID.4 will have an additional trim, which will have a lower price but also a smaller battery capacity. Currently, the ID.4 offers options of rear- or all-wheel drive and 82kWh battery. The new trim level will be a RWD with a smaller 62kWh battery. For this new model, Canadian pricing will start at $43,995, marking a more attractive price point compared to the other two models which are $4,000 and $9,000 pricier, respectively.

Those lucky enough to get their hands on a 2022 ID.4, which was sold at$44,995 with the rear-wheel drive and the 82kWh battery configuration, definitely got the best deal.

Having the ID.4s for the Canadian market, being built in the US will surely decrease wait times for customers and decrease transportation costs than if the company was supplying the North American EV market from Europe.

The 2023 ID.4 will have small changes aesthetically, including a new wheel design, front bumper design and a new 12-inch infotainment system. The seats design will also differ, now incorporating centre sections sourced from recycled fabric.

Canada is expected to receive the 82kWh ID.4s this fall and the 62kWh versions near the end of the year. If you’d like a more up close and personal look at what the currently available 2022 ID.4 has to offer, you can check out the video below.

Toyota offers to buy back its recalled bZ4X electric SUVs.

Back in June 2022, Toyota had recalled the bZ4X for loose wheel bolts. Since then, the company has now offered to buy back the bZ4X all-electric SUV. The Subaru Solterra, which has been developed on the same EV platform as the bZ4x, is also affected by the recall.

The recall, only 2 months after the bZ4X’s release, and involved approximately 2,700 vehicles, involved loose hub bolts on the wheel that could detach itself while the driver was operating the vehicle. bZ4x owners were instructed to contact their local dealer to arrange pick up of the vehicle to fix the issue. In the meantime, owners would receive a loaner vehicle.

Toyota also offered, in a letter to customers, to throw in some extras such as a $5,000 credit, extended warranty and free charging. If an owner is not satisfied with the offers, then Toyota indicated that they would buy-back the vehicle.

“We know that our customers have many choices when it comes to purchasing a vehicle. We appreciate their loyalty and are supporting them through this recall,” Toyota said in a statement. “However, if a customer does not want to proceed with the provided options, we will offer to repurchase their bZ4X.” Toyota adds that the buyback depends on the owner’s state and circumstances.

Customers aren’t sure when they will get their vehicles back and they don’t know what the fix is going to be. All in all, this is not good for the already negatively reviewed bZ4X and Toyota’s goal of 30 new EVs by 2030.
