Tesla Supercharging Network Open to Non-Tesla EVs in Canada.

The Government of Canada has announced an exciting update regarding the country's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. In collaboration with Tesla, the government revealed plans to open a portion of Tesla's Supercharging network to non-Tesla electric vehicles in 2023.

Canada - Wikipedia

The Non-Tesla Supercharger Pilot program is set to launch in Canada, initially connecting Sudbury and Ottawa. Tesla will open a portion of its existing Canadian Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs, subject to approval from site hosts. The government aims to gradually expand the program, including the Trans-Canada Highway route from Ottawa to Calgary. In the coming years, hundreds of charging stalls are expected to be available for non-Tesla EV owners.

By the end of 2025, approximately 750 “charging connectors” (individual stalls), which should be ready for non-Tesla EVs by the end of 2025. At least 350 of these connectors will offer up to 250 kilowatts (kW) of power, equivalent to the V3 level of Tesla Supercharging.

The Non-Tesla Supercharger Pilot program has already been launched in select regions worldwide. In Canada, similar to the United States, Tesla will retrofit its existing Supercharging stalls with the Magic Dock, an integrated CCS1 adapter. This retrofit will enable the use of Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug or a plug with an attached CCS1 adapter for non-Tesla EVs. The program aims to achieve compatibility with various EV models across different markets.

The expansion of the Tesla Supercharging network to non-Tesla EVs in Canada is a positive development for the EV industry. It provides greater accessibility to reliable and fast-charging infrastructure for a wider range of electric vehicles. Ford's recent announcement of adopting Tesla's NACS standard in North America further signals a potential industry shift. As more brands join the Tesla Supercharging network, it could create a domino effect, encouraging even more manufacturers to embrace standardized charging solutions in North America and beyond.

Tesla's Affordable China-Made Electric Cars Make Waves in the Canadian EV Market.

Tesla is making a significant splash in the Canadian electric vehicle (EV) market by introducing affordable electric cars manufactured in China. Originally intended for local demand, Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai quickly became the company's primary export hub, supplying vehicles to Europe, Asia, and Australia. Now, these China-made cars are making their way to Canada, potentially changing the landscape of the Canadian EV market.

Tesla initially planned to manufacture cars in China solely to meet local demand, with no intention of exporting vehicles from the country. However, Gigafactory Shanghai's rapid expansion and its status as the world's largest electric vehicle factory changed that. Tesla began exporting vehicles from China to various markets worldwide but had not imported cars to North America until now.

Tesla's new Model Y RWD, launched in Canada, offers a more affordable price point for the electric SUV at $59,990 CAD. This competitive pricing makes the vehicle eligible for up to $12,000 in incentives. Speculations suggest that this lower-range version may be produced using LFP battery cells, similar to Tesla's base Model 3, potentially indicating that the entire car is manufactured at Gigafactory Shanghai in China. Confirmation of this comes from Tesla's inventory vehicle website, where the VIN numbers indicate the cars' origin.

According to vessel tracking data and local Chinese media reports, Tesla is set to ship a substantial number of vehicles from China to Canada in the coming weeks. Estimates indicate that Tesla aims to transport up to 10,000 vehicles from China to North America this quarter. As the vehicles are from China, it is likely that they will be primarily distributed in Canada due to the unavailability of federal tax credits in the United States for vehicles imported from China.

The influx of China-made Tesla vehicles into Canada is significant, given that the country typically sees around 30,000 all-electric vehicle deliveries per quarter. The availability of the new Model Y, manufactured in China, could have a substantial impact, especially considering its eligibility for the $5,000 federal incentive in Canada. If these vehicles are introduced in high volume, they could potentially reshape the Canadian EV market.
