EV Canada Newsletter: Rivian recall, Honda Prologue, Tesla updates...

Weekly Recap Issue #35 - Tuesday, October 11th, 2022

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope that you’ve had the opportunity to spend time with friends and family and think of all of the amazing things that we take for granted each and every day. Whether its food, water, a hot shower, a place to call home or a vehicle that gets us from point A to point B - we are lucky to have these “necessities” whiles many people in the world do not have. Be thankful.

Rivian is recalling over 120,000 units of their R1T, R1S and EDV electric vehicles, over a potentially loose fastener that could lead to losing control of the vehicle.

Rivian, the California-based automaker emphasizes that the issue is rare and has only been observed in a handful of vehicles, but the recall involves nearly 13,000 vehicles, 12,212 of which have been delivered to customers.

“As of September 28, 2022, Rivian became aware of seven reports potentially related to this issue that had accumulated over the production of Rivian vehicles,” the company said in a statement. “It was determined that the cause of the issue was an insufficiently torqued fastener.”

Specifically, according to recall documents filed with the NHTSA, the fastener connects the front upper control arm and steering knuckle. Warning signs of separation is excessive noise, vibration, and harshness from the front suspension which would affect steering performance.

Until now Rivian has only issued a minor service recall—a potential child airbag-sensor issue affecting about 500 vehicles. The mote recent recall will be the first big test for Rivian’s on-the-ground service operations, as it involves an in-person inspection, by a skilled technician, of every one of Rivians EVs sold. Although the issue can’t be addressed by over-the-air updates, it does not pertain directly to Rivian’s battery packs, motors, or core electric propulsion hardware. Customers are advised to call 855-748-4265 to schedule a mobile service appointment, or they can bring their vehicle to a Rivian service center.

In most cases the process takes just a few minutes and is as simple as tightening the fastener “to a higher torque tolerance.” Rivian says that for the relatively few cases where it will need to replace parts, loaner vehicles will be provided and the vehicle will be brought to a service center.

First fully-electric Honda SUV: Honda Prologue launching in 2024.

Honda is releasing the first look at the exterior and interior styling of the all-new Honda Prologue Elite battery-electric SUV that will come to market in North America in 2024.

The Honda Prologue will be positioned above the CR-V and next to the Passport in the company’s offerings.

The Los Angeles based, Honda design team is responsible for leading the exterior and interior styling of the all-new Prologue. Neo-rugged was the design direction bringing together natural elements to the exterior and interior of Prologue. This design direction is reflected in details such as the panoramic roof and large 21-inch wheels.

“Our goal was to create a clean harmony based on a rugged SUV image by coordinating the colours and materials to express neo-rugged design styling that’s familiar to our customers and uniquely Honda,” said Masaki Sumimoto, design lead for the Colour, Materials and Finish.

To enhance Honda’s EV brand identity, the typical “H-mark” badge on the vehicle is replaced by the full Honda name in a stylized typeface that attempts to capture a modern and clean design. (Personally, not a fan of it). In addition, to align with Honda’s global EV models, Prologue will adopt the brand’s e: series name badging.

“The all-new Prologue is another huge step in Honda’s electrification strategy in North America, which is already well underway,” says Steve Hui, assistant vice president Honda Canada. “With the arrival of the all-new and built in Canada CR-V hybrid available to consumers this fall, we see the Prologue as a natural progression for those who may also consider a Honda EV in their future.”

Honda’s research shows that hybrid-electric customers are among the first to move into full-electric products. Overtime, Honda plans to increase the model mix of the CR-V to 50% hybrid sales.

More details on the Prologue will be released in the coming months with customers encouraged to sign up for updates at https://www.honda.ca/en/future-vehicles/prologue

Honda’s electrification rollout is planned to achieve carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050. Honda also plans to introduce 30 new EVs globally by 2030, with a global sales volume goal of 2 million units. In North America, Honda has laid out an aggressive timeline of EV introductions based on three phases leading to 2030:

2024: Begin sales of the Honda Prologue

2026: Begin sales of Honda models based on Honda e:Architecture to be produced by Honda in North America.

2027: Begin sales of a new series of affordable EVs, also produced by Honda in North America.

GM Defense to develop a battery pack for the US military.

The US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) selects GM Defense, to develop a battery pack for electric military vehicles to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help the military make the transition to clean energy alternatives.

The US Department of Defense has been studying how climate change has impacted their operations and have created an action plan for each of the Departments’ divisions - the US Army, Navy and Air Force.

Part of the action plan focuses on introducing functional military electric vehicles. The Defense Innovation Unit, a division of the DOD aimed at accelerating advanced technology use, announced that GM’s Ultium Platform as been selected to test and analyze use for tactical electric vehicles.

Earlier in 2022, the US Army selected GM defense to demonstrate an electric vehicle for the military, so it provided the GMC Hummer EV pickup.

The Agency is now moving forward with its strategy, awarding GM Defense to build a heavy-duty battery pack to power electric military vehicles in its fight against climate change.

GM has confidence in the Ultium Platform as the EV platform is scalable, with battery options ranging from 50 kWh to over 200 kWh and space for up to 24 modules.

The automaker’s scalable EV platform allows modules to lay flat (for performance vehicles) or vertical for heavy-duty EVs, making it a good choice for US electric military vehicles.
