Tesla’s EV battery types explained.

Tesla is the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer. Tesla’s approach to battery technology, design and composition is arguably the most advanced in the industry. What is Tesla’s secret to success?

The original Tesla Roadster, which was released in 2008, decided to use 18650-type (recently called 1865) cylindrical batteries as there were not many lithium-ion battery options available. The 1865-type batteries were mainly designed for general use and only slight modifications were made for EV specific use. The primary supplier of the 1865-type batteries was Panasonic.

As Tesla developed their battery technology and invested further in EV battery R&D, they concluded that a larger battery cell, with higher capacity but lower number of cells in a battery pack was most favorable for electric vehicles and energy storage. This led to the development of the 2170-type cylindrical cell that has been used for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Panasonic produces the 2170-type at the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada and LG Energy Solution supplies them in China for the Tesla Giga Shanghai plant.

The most recent developments in battery cell design is a larger cylindrical 4680-type. It is 5-times bigger than the 2170-type and poses production challenges. For this reason, Tesla has started their own in-house development and production in California and Texas.

As of 2022, a prismatic battery, supplied by CATL is being used for almost half of all Tesla vehicles and are the foundation of the less expensive entry-level Tesla models.

Tesla battery cell types:

  • 1865-type (18 mm in diameter and 65 mm tall)use: Roadster (original), Model S, Model X

  • 2170-type (21 mm in diameter and 70 mm tall)use: Model 3, Model Y

  • 4680-type (46 mm in diameter and 80 mm tall)use: Model Y Made-in-Texas (in the future also Model Y from Germany and new models)

  • prismaticuse: entry-level Model 3 and Model Y

When looking at battery cell types, it is important to consider the battery chemistry.

The three main cathode types in Tesla EVs:

  • nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM):The NCA and NCM types have high energy density, are used in cylindrical cells which makes their ideal use-case for long-range versions of Tesla vehicles.

  • lithium iron phosphate (LFP):The LFP type has less energy density, but does not contain nickel or cobalt which makes it less expensive. This is ideal for entry-level, lower range vehicles.

Tesla has signed many agreements with mining companies across the world as they hope to procure enough resources to meet their sales and production goals. Tesla has indicated on numerous occasions that they are looking to reduce the cobalt content in their batteries while also looking to improve energy density and cost of their batteries.

Ford has recalled 464 Mustang Mach-Es.

464 Mustang Mach-Es have been recalled by Ford because of a software issue affecting the vehicle’s speed. The affected models are the dual-motor all-wheel drive versions of the 2021 model year. In the recall documents, it does indicate “unintended acceleration” but the recall seems to be related more to the ability of the vehicles’ safety software to detect unintended vehicle movement.

There is an over-the-air update available to fix the issue but Mach-E owners can still take their vehicle to their local dealership to receive the update/fix.

Although there are not reports of any accidents caused by the issue, Ford will be deploying the over-the-air update later this month.

Comparing the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to the Volkswagen ID.4.

I am lucky enough to have driven a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and have to say that I enjoyed the driving experience even more than the Tesla Model 3. Having said that I have not had the chance to drive a major competitor: the I.D4. Here is a good comparison video that talks about both models and hits on some key features that you may want to consider when looking at ordering either of these two vehicles.

Polestar releases annual report and prepares for Polestar 3.

Polestar has released their annual review and sustainability report. Polestar’s goal is to produce a climate-neutral vehicle by 2030, reduce carbon emissions by 50% per sold car between 2020 and 2030 and reach climate neutrality by 2040. In their report, Polestar has reduced greenhouse gas-emissions per car sold by 6% through increased process efficiency and utilization of renewable energy sources.

Polestar invests in extreme fast charging battery company StoreDot; unlocks access to advanced battery technology

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, says: “We work with each step we take to support our climate strategy. Goals set 10 or 20 years ahead in time might feel fluffy. That’s where proper reporting comes in – making us accountable for the steps taken every year towards that goal. This is the climate decade. Change and improvement must happen all the time, now, and we can’t afford to wait. I’m proud to say we reduced greenhouse gas-emissions per car sold by 6%.”

Polestar was the first automotive brand to join the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, the science-led cross-sector collaboration alliance, committed to halving global emissions by 2030. Polestar has also committed to the UN’s Race to Zero. Race To Zero is a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, investors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.

In other Polestar news, they will expand their electric vehicle offering by adding it’s third model and first SUV.

The Polestar 3 will share some aspects with the upcoming third-generation Volvo XC90 but will be powered by a fully electric powertrain. Polestar has indicated that the official debut of the zero-emissions crossover is scheduled for October 2022 and the customers will be able to order it on the day of the global premiere.

Polestar believes that there is major potential for growth with the launch of the Polestar 3 as the SUV market is one of the highest growth and margin segments in the automotive industry today.
