Now on to EV news:

Canada

New EVs coming to Canada in the second half of 2022 and new EV launches on the horizon.

I’ll be the first to say that having more EV options is better for the consumer. More options = more competition = better pricing = more EV adoption = better for the environment.

There have been so many EV models revealed in the past year and it can be hard to track. There are even more launches happening soon (keep an eye out for launch dates so that you can get your name on a reservation ASAP).

Finally in 2022, it seems like EV automakers are finally getting their sh*t together and after years of denying or pushing off EV development here we are in 2022 where Cadillac is releasing an EV, Chevrolet is coming out with EV versions of their popular ICE lines, Tesla and Audi are thriving and we will see Nissan come out with something other than a Leaf.

I can’t solely blame the automakers because there was a pandemic and there is still an active war in Ukraine which most definitely has created some obstacles. I’m really hoping that coming into Q3 with new EV options and hopefully finishing off the year strong, we will see more EV adoption to come in 2023 with manufacturers overcoming the supply chain issues and pump out as many EVs as possible.

The Nissan Ariya.

Set to arrive on the streets in late 2022, the Nissan Ariya has been gaining positive reviews lately. When the Ariya was first announced back in 2020, critics had mixed reviews. However, the price point ~$46,000 seems like a great deal when compared to other options. Personally (mistakenly) I should have given the Ariya more attention as I believe it will be a great option for many people. I think the Ariya will be a great option for it’s price and range - which is ~500kms. You cannot currently reserve an Ariya at this time at Nissan.ca, but models should become more readily available in 2023. If you are interested in learning more about the Ariya, check out the video below:

EV Around the World 🌏

VinFast is growing and opening showrooms in California.

VinFast, the Vietnamese automaker was only recently founded in 2017. They have been selling vehicles in Vietnam for a bit over 2 years and are now expanding. VinFast has their sights on some ambitious goals such as expanding into North America and build 2 production facilities – one in North Carolina and one in Germany.

How have they been able to expand so fast?

VinFast has never had funding issues. They are part of a large conglomerate, Vingroup which hosts a variety of different companies diversifying across a range of industries all bearing the “Vin” prefix. They are involved in property (VinHomes), smartphones (VinSmart), education (VinSchool), holiday resorts (VinPearl), pharmacy (VinFA), and that's just the tip of the iceberg. So, when Vingroup decided to enter the automotive industry through VinFast financial backing was not an issue.

VinFast's first six US showrooms will open by mid-July and have a total of 30 showrooms by the end of 2022 all to be in California.

VinFast will initially sell two EVs in North America - the VF8 crossover and VF9 SUV. Prices start at approx. $53,000 CAD and approx. $73,000 CAD respectively. When you equip the largest available batteries on both, the VF8 has a claimed 470-km range meanwhile the larger VF9 can manage up to 600 km per charge according to VinFast.

The VF8 is powered by an 82 kWh battery as standard, however an 87 kWh pack is optional. As for the VF9, it comes equipped with a 92 kWh pack at entry-level meanwhile a 123 kWh battery can be opted for. Buyers can also opt into a battery subscription models. The subscription allows for your vehicle's battery to be replaced for free should it suffer severe damage/degradation.

VinFast is also one of the few manufacturers heavily invested in solid-state battery tech. The firm recently partnered with ProLogium with the aim of bringing solid-state tech to its production cars by 2024.

What are do you think about VinFast? Would you consider a VinFast EV for your next purchase?

Human Horizons reveals more details on HiPhi Z electric vehicle.

Back in 2021, Human Horizons revealed the HiPhi Z GT futuristic EV. The Chinese startup describes the vehicle as “ultra-futuristic digital GT” with the goal of having drivers feel like they’re stepping into a vehicle from 20 years in the future.

The design of the HiPhi defintely makes my eye balls feel like they’re looking at the latest Disney+ modern adaptation of Back to the Future. Seemingly random black and blue panel parts aside, I like the look of this machine.

Although no official rollout dates have been announced, Human Horizons have indicated that the HiPhi Z will cost between $115,000 CAD and $170,000 CAD and only available in China for the time being - news of offerings outside of China have not been released.
