LG Energy Solution and Stellantis could build EV battery plant in Ontario.

Stellantis is a multinational automaker corporation who operates brands such as Chrysler, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Jeep, Fiat, Ram, Maserati, Peugeot and more, is to form a partnership with LG Energy Solution, a storage battery manufacturing company. Together, they have announced a plan to build a new joint venture to construct an EV battery gigafactory in Ontario.

Currently, Stellantis produces the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (PHEV) as well as it's ICE counterparts: the Pacifica, Grand Caravan and Voyager (which nearly, all look like the exact same van to me) at their plant in Windsor, Ontario.

Unofficially Automotive News Canada indicates that the Windsor area is the location where the partnership will construct their battery cell plant. An official announcement is expected on soon. The plant is intended to have an annual output of 40Gwh and start production beginning in 2024.

The other battery partner for Stellantis is Samsung SDI. The two partners intend to build a 23 GWh battery gigafactory in North America.

Honda to Spend $1.4 Billion CAD on EV Upgrade in Ontario.

Honda will join other major vehicle brands as it announced that it will upgrade its Ontario facilities to produce cleaner vehicles.

Honda has announced it will invest $1.4-billion CAD over the next 6 years to produce the electric hybrid version of the Honda CR-V at its plant in Alliston, Ontario. In addition to this funding, federal and provincial governments will contribute $263-million.

“Now, as we build a cleaner future, the automotive sector is a key partner in powering the way forward,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a news conference at the plant.

Since 2020 major vehicle brands have announced billions of dollars worth of investments in Ontario to build "green" vehicles.

Want to learn more about the true cost of owning an electric vehicle? You may be considering an EV, whether it’s because gas prices continue to rise, to skip gas stations altogether and “recharge” from the comfort of your own home, to do your part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to reduce vehicle maintenance, or maybe it’s for performance. When considering an EV, it is important to understand the true cost of ownership and although some EVs may come at an initially higher price than their ICE counterpart, the cost of ownership is substantially lower. Check out this video from Jeremie Bernardin, Business Development Manager at All EV where he provides details on the cost of ownership of an electric vehicle.

Samsung SDI, one of the largest lithium-ion battery manufacturers for electric vehicles, announced that it has started construction of a solid-state battery line.

Samsung SDI will continue research and development at their facility in South Korea. An approximate release date of a commercial product is currently not available.

What is a solid-state battery and how does it differ from traditional lithium-ion batteries?

A lithium-ion battery is composed of a cathode (negatively charged electrode) an anode (positively charged electrode), a separator (typically polyolefin) and an electrolyte (medium of which allows electrons to flow).

A lithium-ion battery uses a liquid electrolyte (a lithium salt solution such as lithium hexafluorophosphate) while a solid-state battery uses a solid electrolyte(lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LIPON)).

What are the advantages of solid-state batteries over their lithium-ion batteries?

SafetyLiquid electrolytes are volatile and flammable in high temperatures. In contrast, solid ones are more stable and reduce the risk or fire or explosion.

Higher energy density and faster charging timesIncreased stability means that solid-state batteries can hold up to 50% more energy that their lithium-ion counterparts, while they’re expected to reach an 80% charge within 12 minutes.

Smaller weight and  sizeWhile the liquid inside lithium-ion batteries makes them heavier, the compact structure of solid-state batteries allows them to increase energy density per unit area, which means that a smaller amount of batteries is needed.

Fresh of being crowned European Car of the Year for 2022, the Kia EV6 sets sights on being the World’s Car of Year where finalists are all electric vehicles.

The final 3 vehicles being considered for Car of the Year are all electric vehicles and include the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6.

Hankook announces electric vehicle specific tires.

Hankook will be releasing electric vehicle specific tires ranging from 18”-22”. This will include the Hankook Ventus iON S summer tire, a winter version called the Winter i*cept iON and the Ventus iON A all-season EV tire.

Why should you purchase EV specific tires? Well firstly, they have been specifically designed and engineered with EVs in mind.

  • Tires for electric vehicles carry a heavier load and have to withstand high instant torque, leading to higher tire wear, so tires with stronger constructions and more robust rubber compounds are needed.

  • Greater mass and increased inertia means longer braking distance, so designs place a special emphasis on optimal grip.

  • With high instant torque, increased weight, the demand for a long range and lower emissions comes an even greater need for minimal rolling resistance, so tires for electric cars offer a smoother, more energy-efficient and low-impact ride.
