EV Canada Newsletter: Ioniq 6, Polestar 5, Apterra + More!

Weekly Recap Issue #23 - Tuesday, June 28th, 2022

Hello, thank you for joining me for this weeks EV Canada Newsletter. Last week I was on vacation, and I hope you enjoyed the EV discussion with Todd Miller. Now that I’m back and refreshed let’s look at the latest in EV news:

Canada

Hyundai has finally raised the curtain on the Ioniq 6.

Hyundai has officially released media relating to the Ioniq 6 and at first glance - it’s style is definitely unique.

Taking a look at the exterior: keeping as close as possible to the 2020 concept car, the vehicle has an unconventional look as Hyundai wanted to keep the drag coefficient as low as possible, currently stated to be at 0.21. The wheel base is longer than the Ioniq 5's which increases space for rear passengers and cargo. The Ioniq 6 also shares the 700 “Parametric Pixel” in the rear - just like the Ioniq 5.

Taking a look at the interior: The Ioniq 6 interior looks very similar to the Ioniq 5’s but seems to be pushed to the next level/upgraded. Upgrades include a bridge-type center console for storage and 2x 12-inch displays.

Currently, Hyundai has not released any information on the powertrain, (but is expected to be the same as the Ioniq 5) so details on charging and range are not available. It is expected that more details will be released later in July 2022. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is set to go on sale (no details on pricing) in early 2023 and sold as a 2024 model.

EV Around the World 🌏

Hyundai partners with Michelin to develop EV specific tires that are environmentally friendly.

As you may be aware, the additional weight of EVs due to the battery cells and the added torque of electric motors requires EVs to use a special tire. More attention needs to be applied to increasing the range of EVs than traditional gas-powered vehicles as well.

With the above in mind. Hyundai and Michelin have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which will lead to developing next-generation tires with clean, smart and sustainable mobility solutions top of mind.

Michelin North America, Inc.

Over the next three years, the partnership will jointly work together to develop the following innovations: eco-friendly tires with increased use of eco-friendly materials; tires optimized for next-generation EVs and a real-time tire monitoring system which will help advance autonomous driving technology.

With their research, they hope to analyze tire wear, tire load and road friction which goes above simply tire temperature and air pressure. The new tires are also expected to significantly improve drivers’ ride comfort by reducing vibration and noise generated by EVs at high speeds.

Polestar 5 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Polestar has demonstrated the progress made on the development of the Polestar 5 at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Polestar 5 is described as a “high performance electric 4-door GT”. The vehicle is being developed in Sweden with a state of the art, top of the line electric dual motor powertrain on a 800-volt architecture with the goal of achieving 650 kW (884 hp).

Pete Allen, Head of Polestar UK R&D, says: “Polestar 5 is shaping up to be a superb 4-door GT and a true Polestar at heart. The platform combines low-volume performance car attributes with modern technological advances to bring light-weight, high-rigidity sports car chassis technology into mass production.”

The Polestar 5 is set for launch in 2024 and is the last of 3 new EVs expected to be launched by Polestar in the next 3 years, following the Polestar 3 & Polestar 4 electric SUVs.

Jörg Brandscheid, Polestar’s CTO and Head of R&D, says: “The new powertrain we are working on will set a new brand benchmark in our high-performing cars. Combining strong electric motor engineering ability with advances in light-weight platform technology is leading to truly stunning driver’s cars.”
