How EV owners can tackle Canadian winter range reduction.

The range of an electric vehicle (EV) is affected by a variety of factors, including temperature, driving habits, and vehicle type. One issue that EV owners may encounter is reduced range in cold weather is a range related issue that EV owners may encounter. This can be a major concern for us Canadians who live in climates with harsh winters.

One reason for reduced range in cold weather is that the battery's chemical reactions slow down at lower temperatures, reducing its overall performance. This can be especially noticeable in extreme cold, when the battery may struggle to maintain its charge. Additionally, the increased use of heating and other electrical systems in the car can also drain the battery faster, further reducing the range.

There are several steps that EV owners can take to minimize range loss in winter. First, pre-conditioning the vehicle can help warm up the battery and other systems before driving, improving their performance. This can be done by setting the car to "pre-heat" (or similar setting based on your EV) using a timer or a remote-control app.

Another way to improve range in cold weather is to reduce the use of heating and other electrical systems while driving. For example, using seat warmers instead of the heater can help keep the cabin warm without using as much energy. Additionally, using the car's "eco" or "range" mode can help conserve battery power and extend the range.

Finally, it's important to plan ahead and avoid making long trips in cold weather if possible. This can help ensure that the battery has enough charge to reach your destination and reduce the need for using energy-intensive systems while driving.

Overall, while range loss in cold weather is a common issue for EV owners, but there are steps that can be taken to minimize its impact and ensure that the vehicle has adequate range for daily use. By pre-conditioning the vehicle, reducing the use of electrical systems, and planning ahead, EV owners can enjoy the benefits of their electric vehicle even in the coldest weather.

The Corvette E-Ray accidentally shown on Chevrolet website.

General Motors' Chevy brand has accidentally leaked details about its upcoming electrified Corvette sports car, also known as the 2024 Corvette E-Ray. The information, which appeared on Chevy's online configurator, showed the car's colors and available packages. It also indicated that the car would not be a plug-in hybrid, but would rely solely on regenerative breaking to fill its batteries. The company has said it is working on a fully electric version of the vehicle that should be available shortly after the hybrid version.

The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray model that appeared on the company's online vehicle configurator revealed a lot of details about the vehicle that potential buyers may be interested in, such as the availability of a red interior and carbon fiber wheels. However, many details about the vehicle remain unknown, including its fuel economy, price, battery specifications and which buttons would activate regenerative braking. The configurator did not include this information and it cannot be determined simply by looking at or listening to the car. Spy photos of the vehicle driving around Detroit are not likely to provide much additional information.

As for its EPA rating, the E-Ray seems more like a car that goes with hybrid tech, not for the fuel savings — it’s paired with a V8, after all — but for the instant, off-the-line torque that sports car drivers crave.

General Motors (GM) has hinted that it could spin its Corvette brand off as its own separate brand by 2025. As GM expands its electric vehicle (EV) range with the likes of electric midrange SUVs, trucks and the Hummer EV, the company has suggested that its Corvette range of two-door sports cars, which will include hybrid and fully electric models, could be spun off into its own brand. This would also include a four-door version of the vehicle and an SUV.
