EV Canada Newsletter: Canada has potential to be a key materials source in the EV supply chain.

Weekly Recap Issue #17 - Tuesday, May 10th, 2022

Canada

Canada has major potential to become a key player in the EV supply chain but more investments are needed.

The government of Canada is in discussion with many companies interested in setting up in Canada and playing a role in the EV supply chain within the country. This comes as the Canadian government seeks to cut carbon emissions to net zero by 2050 and play a role in the shift toward greener cars.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Fancois-Philippe Champagne has said that they have been having active discussions with a number of companies including Volkswagen and executives from companies from the United States, Japan and Korea.

The government of Canada has invested in EV projects to help mineral producers and processors to scale up production through a multi-billion dollar fund which was initially set up in 2020. The government of Canada has recently pledged $3.8-Billion CAD over 8 years to help boost the production and processing of critical minerals used in EVs in an effort to achieve the goal of all sales of passenger vehicles to be zero emissions by 2035.

The government has met with EV industry players outside of EV manufacturers as well, to develop a strategy to make Canadian minerals, like lithium, cobalt and nickel, the key source to EV production in North America. The plan will be completed this year.

Canadian mineral companies are ready to meet the demand and step up to meet demand.

  • Nouveau Monde Graphite aims to scale up its production of graphite-based anode material to 45,000 tonnes per year by 2025.

  • Nemaska Lithium is focusing on construction of its Whabouchi lithium mine in Quebec and a conversion plant, with the aim of producing about 34 000 tonnes per year.

  • Electra Battery Materials is expanding a refinery for battery-grade cobalt and nickel sulfate in Temiskaming Shores, Ontario, and aims to produce materials needed for lithium-ion batteries by 2025.

  • Avalon Advanced Materials, plans to refine lithium in partnership with a unit of India's Essar Group in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

William Adams, head of battery materials research at British commodities price reporting group Fastmarkets, has been warning of mineral shortages if production is not scaled up.

"Canada is blessed... It's got nickel, it's got cobalt, and it's got lithium," Adams said. "But like everywhere else, it needs a lot more investment in all these projects."

The Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, SEAT and more) reports that demand is so strong for their electric vehicles, that their manufacturing capabilities are currently overwhelmed.

Herbert Diess, Volkswagen Group CEO, told Financial Times that their electric vehicles are sold out for 2022 in Europe and US with a back log of approximately 300,000 units have been reached in Europe alone. Therefore, most orders placed now will result in a 2023 delivery. For most customers that is a tough pill to swallow.

During the first quarter of 2022, Volkswagen group sold approximately 99,100 all-electric vehicles (up 65% year-over-year). They plan to sell roughly 700,000 BEVs total in 2022 which would be 200,000 per quarter for the rest of the year which will prove to be a difficult task as their best quarter was Q4 2021 where they managed to produce 159,800 units especially with global supply chain issues caused by global events such as COVID and the war in Ukraine.
