Canada

Volkswagen considering Canada for next battery cell plant.

Canada has made VW, and their subsidiary PowerCo's shortlist for sites being considered for their next battery cell gigafactory - which will be the first one outside of Europe. The companies are looking to accelerate their global battery market via quick expansion in North America.

"Battery technology is key for our strategy ‒ which is why we are forging ahead with the expansion of battery business at full speed. Canada is one logical option for the construction of a gigafactory in the region of North America. The country offers high sustainability standards and ideal economic conditions and the government of Canada has already proven to be a strong and reliable partner. This is just the beginning: The EV market in North America is at a turning point and we're committed to investing across the entire region to leverage this historic chance for Volkswagen and our customers." - Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume

In addition to the gigafactory location search announcement, Volkswagen's PowerCo has also announced an agreement with materials technology group Umicore to investigate a strategic supply agreement on cathode material for North America.

Umicore is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium and started about 200 years ago as a mining company and has since evolved into materials technology company.

Umicore plans to start construction of a manufacturing facility for large-scale production of industrial cathode materials in Canada from 2023.

BrightDrop, GM's electric delivery subsidiary expands to Canada.

BrightDrop has landed DHL Express Canada as a client where they will provide long-range EV vans to DHL. BrightDrop has just announced that production has started on its Zevo 600 delivery van at their Ontario assembly plant.

BrightDrop’s Zevo all-electric delivery vehicle.

The Ontario plant had $800-million invested by GM and is Canada's first large-scale EV factory. BrightDrop expects to produce 50,000 Zevo EVs per year by 2025 with the first Zevo 600s started and the smaller Zevo 400 to start production in late 2023. BrightDrop says that they have over 25,000 vehicles on reserve for over 30 customers. FedEx also said it will reserve 2,500 vans and has already taken delivery of 150 Zevo 600 EVs. Other customers include Walmart, Hertz and Verizon.

DHL Express Canada is set to receive their first Zevo vans early next year and setting their sights on the comapany's sustainability goals. DHL Express already has over 27,000 EVs in their fleet globally.

According to the Verge, BrightDrop projects that it will achieve $1 billion in revenue for 2023 and $10 billion with a 20 percent profit margin by the end of the decade. The company is part of GM’s $35 billion pivot into EVs and is intended to be a “one stop shop” for first- and last-mile delivery vehicles, logistical software, and other services. BrightDrop is picking up the pace to put more Zevo vans into service as its competition from Ford, Rivian and Arrival heat up.
