Weekly Recap Issue #33 - Tuesday, September 27th, 2022

Thanks for taking the time to read the EV Canada Newsletter. If your area has been affected by hurricane Fiona, I hope that you and your family are safe. Some areas have been affected more than others and I hope that restorations and clean up goes smoothly for you all. Now on to EVs:

Canada

LG Energy Solution partners with three Canadian battery material companies to strengthen supply chain in North America.

LG Energy Solution signed three separate partnership agreements with Snow Lake Resources Ltd., Electra Battery Materials Corporation and Avalon Advanced Materials Inc. to secure lithium and cobalt resources for the production of their EV batteries. This also strengthens LG Energy Solution's strategic vision to have a strong role in the battery materials supply chain in North America.

During the signing ceremony, in Toronto, Canada, LGES and Electra have signed terms where Electra will supply 7,000 tons of cobalt sulfate for 3 years beginning in 2023. Electra ia the only supplier capable of refining cobalt sulfate in North America.,

LGES also signed two non-binding Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with Avalon and Snow Lake to secure a stable, consistent supply of lithium. Under the terms of the MoUs, Avalon will supply LGES with lithium hydroxide (11,000 tons per year) for five years initially, starting in 2025. LGES will also be provided with Snow Lake’s lithium hydroxide (20,000 tons per year) for ten years once the production starts in 2025. Lithium hydroxide is used in the production of the cathode material used in lithium-ion electric vehicle batteries.

“As we have recently announced our mid- to long-term strategy to focus on North America, the fastest growing EV market, these partnerships serve as a crucial step towards securing a stable key raw material supply chain in the region,” said Youngsoo Kwon, CEO of LG Energy Solution. “By constantly investing in upstream suppliers and establishing strategic partnerships with major suppliers of critical minerals, LGES will continue to ensure the steady delivery of our top-quality products, thereby further advancing the global transition to EVs and ultimately to a sustainable future.”

As global automakers scramble to transition properly to electric vehicles and compete with Tesla globally, partnerships such as those announced will be key secure a strong supply chain of critical materials for EV batteries.

With the recently implemented Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), has put even more importance of EV battery components manufactured or assembled in North America, and battery manufacturers’ establishing local supply chain within North America.

A plan to power up to 1-Million New York homes, utilizing clean electricity from Hydro-Quebec has been approved.

The plan, known as the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) will utilize a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power line to deliver an estimated 1,250 megawatts of clean electricity to New York City.

Buried cables will run from Hertel substation in La Prairie, Quebec to a connection point in Richelieu River, run along the Lake Champlain and Hudson river to a station in New York connecting to the Con Edision grid.

Here are a few highlights of the project:

  • Hydro-Quebec is the fourth-largest hydropower producer in the world.

  • HVDC power lines will be used because direct current (DC) energy transmissions over long distances are more efficient than alternating current (AC).

  • Will transmit electricity over 600km.

  • The project will run along existing waterways, roads, and railroads.

  • The cables will be monitored on a continuous basis and will be virtually maintenance-free.

VW and Amazon partner to give EV customers Alexa-guided test drives.

Volkswagen and Amazon come together on an innovative partnership to take EV test drives to a new level. Starting this fall, customers are able to schedule in-person Alexa-guided test drives in the VW ID.4.

Customers will meet with a Volkswagen Product Specialist and then take the ID.4 for a test drive with the Amazon Alexa as their companion. The Alexa guided test drive will be enabled through an Echo Auto device on the vehicle’s dashboard.

Alexa is capable to share information about the ID.4’s features and specs, including its battery, charging, blind spot monitor, connecting to infotainment, cost, regular maintenance, and much more.

“In our push to bring EVs and electromobility to all, we need to find new and exciting ways to talk to our customers,” said Andrew Savvas, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, Volkswagen Group of America. “This collaboration with Amazon does just that. Future Volkswagen owners can experience all our ID.4 has to offer with the aid of a voice service they’ve already come to know.”

You can sign up (if you reside in available regions) at www.amazon.com/id4testdrive for a Test Drive With Alexa, and configure your own ID.4. Test drives will take approximately 30 minutes.
